WE have been digging through our archives this week, uncovering hidden gems from Cheshire's past.

This photograph shows Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall during his time at Winsford United.

The internationally acclaimed footballer has been described as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation, and went on to play for Everton between 1981 and 1998, making 578 appearances for the team.

He joined Cheshire County League club Winsford United at the age of 20.

The club won the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1980, and he was voted the club's Player of the Year.

Born in Llandudno, he also played internationally for Wales, although he did not feature in any major international competitions.

The goalkeeper was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to football in 1996.

Since retirement, he has briefly managed and coached various clubs and also worked extensively with disadvantaged children.
