As well as appearing in print, our death notice pages will remain online as a lasting tribute to the memory of those we have lost.

Anyone who wishes to send their own message of condolence can do so by visiting the deceased's death notice page.

George Derek 'Degsie' Shirley

George Derek Shirley, affectionately known to everyone, including his grandchildren, as 'Degsie', sadly died on May 24.

A true local character and the much-loved 'celebrity of Hartford', Degsie was woven into the fabric of Cheshire life.

As publican of The Coachman for almost two decades until the early 1990s, his extroverted personality, infectious smile, and generosity made him an extremely popular and successful landlord.

During those years, he was at the heart of countless charitable events, bringing the community together.

His success led to him being offered a role with the company, marking the next chapter in a varied and accomplished career.

Football was his lifelong passion.

Taken to Maine Road by his older sister Joan at the age of seven, he fell in love with Manchester City - a devotion that never wavered, even through the long years without silverware.

The Pep Guardiola era, with its glittering trophies, brought him immense joy, and he proudly shared that passion with his son and grandson.

Degsie’s life also included serving as chairman of Witton Albion Football Club, founding a successful events company, and working as a respected business development director.

An animal lover, a community man, and a friend to many, he will be deeply missed by his long term partner Mary and his family and friends.
