MORE than 500 batteries have been recycled by one Scout group.

The batteries were recycled by the 1st Northwich Scout Group as part of a national environmental campaign to encourage young people to develop sustainable habits and protect the environment.

The project is part of a partnership between VARTA Consumer Batteries UK and the Scouts, aiming to promote positive environmental action among young people.

As part of the campaign, the scouts collected used batteries while spreading the message about recycling them safely.

One Cub Scout said: “We had lots of fun completing the badge. I really enjoyed it because we got to see how our actions impact the environment. It was so good we even earned a green Blue Peter Badge.”

The scheme also featured hands-on education activities focused on sustainability, including the 'Ready, Steady, Recycle' challenge to improve recycling habits at home.

Scout Volunteer Cat Holman said: “We’re really proud of the effort our Cub Scouts have put into promoting battery recycling.

"They wrote letters about why recycling batteries is important and were absolutely amazed to receive a response from the King.

"The Cubs also enjoyed getting out into the community for a litter pick.

"It was great to see them working together and taking pride in making their local area cleaner, and they were really pleased with the difference they made.”

Simon Laidler from VARTA Consumer Batteries UK said: “We are thrilled to partner with The Scouts, aligning our commitment to sustainability with their focus on environmental responsibility.

"Our battery recycling campaign shows the real impact young people can have when they are empowered to take action.”
