RADIO Northwich is set to celebrate its eighth year on the airwaves with a special live broadcast.

Today (May 14) the station plans to stream its output into Barons Quay, where it is located, marking the occasion with a unique twist.

Every song played during the live programmes will be one of the 680 which peaked at number eight in the Official UK Singles Charts between 1960 and 2020.

The station encourages anyone passing through the square to stop by and request a song from the list.

Since its launch in 2018, Radio Northwich has grown from a local station to one boasting a global reach, with online listeners tuning in from as far away as Tasmania.

But the station remains deeply rooted in Cheshire life, focusing on local stories, events, charities, and individuals.

It has also become a valuable resource for young people, offering them the chance to experience a real working radio station, learn communication skills, and potentially discover new career paths.

Co-owners of Radio Northwich John Thompson and Kim Smith come from unconventional backgrounds.

Kim was a nurse and midwife, while John worked as a commercial sales manager.

Their different experiences and skill sets have contributed to the station's success, creating something that genuinely matters to the community.

John said: "While on the surface it’s a celebration of a local radio station… it feels like something much bigger than that.

"In a world dominated by algorithms, national feeds, and endless noise, Radio Northwich has quietly become something genuinely important - a beating heart of community life.

"Sometimes the best things are built not by following a traditional blueprint… but by people who care enough about a place to create something for it."

Radio Northwich began broadcasting around the time of the Charlatans' Northwich homecoming concerts.

Since then, it has evolved into an award-winning community organisation that supports local events, charities, music, sport, and good news stories across the town.

The station broadcasts online 24/7 and has more than 30 volunteer presenters, offering a wide range of show content.

Radio Northwich's anniversary celebration will be a testament to its enduring impact on the community and its role as a platform for local voices.
