A VOLUNTEER group is being celebrated for its big impact on the town's railway station.
The Friends of Northwich Station have welcomed praise and recognition for their efforts in transforming the station into what has been described as a 'true gateway to the town', following their recent win at the Cheshire Best Kept Stations Awards.
The award highlights the group’s commitment to creating a welcoming and attractive environment for travellers along the Mid Cheshire Line, which links Northwich with Altrincham, Stockport and Manchester.
Andrew Cooper, MP for Mid Cheshire, visited the station alongside John Hulme, president of Cheshire Best Kept Stations, to congratulate the volunteers.
Mr Cooper said: "Seeing the volunteers out in force this morning, litter picking around the station and taking real pride in their surroundings, summed up exactly why this award is so well deserved.
"The Friends of Northwich Station don’t just maintain the space – they actively care for it, improve it, and make it a welcoming place for everyone who passes through."
He highlighted the group’s contributions, from maintaining a clean environment to introducing art, planting and community schemes.
Mr Cooper said these efforts have 'helped turn Northwich Station into a true gateway to the town'.
John Hulme, a Northwich resident and founder of Cheshire Best Kept Stations, praised the station’s progress since the building collapse in May 2021.
Mr Hulme said: "I am delighted to see Northwich Station rise from the ashes following the building collapse in May 2021.
"The plantings by the volunteers and impressive artwork created by local schools and local artist Jim Stanley send a clear and uplifting message – a true renaissance is underway at our local station."
Simon Barber, leader of the Friends of Northwich Station, said the group takes pride in its efforts to create a positive first impression of the town.
Mr Barber said: "If you visit our station at Northwich, you will see how the Friends of Northwich Station are helping to create a warm and welcoming first and lasting impression of our town for our visitors.
"I am proud of what our small group has achieved, and very pleased that Cheshire Best Kept Stations has chosen to recognise our work in its recent awards."
