World Car Design of the Year winner, the Mazda6e, arrives at Oakmere Mazda this summer, signalling Mazda’s step into the mainstream long‑range EV market. It’s an all‑electric fastback saloon that reinvents the Mazda6 for the electric age, blending craftsmanship, thoughtful design and technology into a refreshingly different option in the aspirational end of the mid‑sized EV segment.
The accolades have started early. The Mazda6e has already been awarded the prestigious 2026 World Car Design of the Year title at the New York International Auto Show – Mazda’s third win in this category after the MX‑5 in 2016 and Mazda3 in 2020. Established in 2004, the World Car Awards are decided by an international jury of around 100 automotive journalists from 33 countries, with the 6e winning from a list of 99 eligible contenders.
Oakmere Mazda’s Sales Manager, Matthew Griffiths, sums up dealer sentiment: “We are truly excited for the arrival of the Mazda6e in the UK, and the recent World Car Design of the Year award is a fantastic achievement for the model on such a global scale. Our customers have always appreciated Mazda’s award‑winning design, and the upcoming Mazda6e is recognition of Mazda’s design approach to an exciting and new generation of electric vehicles, combining great design, technology and style.”
Design and cabin
The Mazda6e represents a modern interpretation of Mazda’s Kodo – Soul of Motion design philosophy, tailored for the brand’s electric future. Its elegant proportions, sculpted surfaces and warm, inviting cabin express a balance between movement, harmony and precision deeply rooted in Japanese craftsmanship. Smooth flowing lines, a low roofline and short‑deck coupé silhouette give a sporty, premium look while keeping the practicality of a five‑door hatchback.
Stand‑out details include frameless doors and a bold lighting signature that give the car a distinctive presence day and night. At the front, a new glowing signature wing illuminates around the grille and even “flutters” when the car is charging, with the lighting also indicating charge status, while the rear’s full‑width lamp bar and new Mazda lettering replace the traditional badge. Another unique touch is the electronically extendable rear spoiler – both a visual flourish and an aid to stability at speed.
Inside, the cabin is flooded with natural light thanks to a standard panoramic roof, creating an airy ambience and strong sense of space. The interior is inspired by the Japanese concept of “Ma” – the beauty of space – with a floating centre console and slim, horizontal dashboard emphasising lightness and calm. Premium materials feature throughout both UK trim levels, Takumi and Takumi Plus: Takumi offers black or stone Maztex artificial leather, while Takumi Plus upgrades to tan Nappa leather with Artificial Suede Cloth woven fabric inserts.
Practicality is competitive for the class. There is excellent occupant space for four adults, while the boot offers a generous 466 litres, backed up by a 72‑litre front storage compartment that is ideal for charging cables and smaller bags.
Tech and equipment
The smart driver‑focused cockpit combines a 14.6‑inch central touchscreen with a 10.2‑inch digital instrument set and an augmented‑reality head‑up display. The infotainment system integrates wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built‑in navigation, Amazon Alexa voice control (on compatible markets) and a high‑quality DAB audio system. The large central screen can be controlled by touch, voice and simple hand gestures, depending on specification.
Both Takumi and Takumi Plus models come very well equipped for under £40,000. Standard features include LED auto‑levelling headlamps, a powered tailgate, auto headlights and wipers, front and rear parking sensors, a reversing camera, smart keyless entry and adaptive cruise control with speed limiter. Inside, you can expect heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, tri‑zone climate control, the 10.2‑inch digital cluster and the augmented‑reality head‑up display, with Takumi Plus adding the Nappa leather and further trim upgrades.
All Mazda6e drivers also benefit from the latest MyMazda app. On this EV it can be used to remotely start or stop charging, schedule and control cabin pre‑conditioning, send navigation routes to the car and lock or unlock the doors – all from a smartphone, tablet or PC.
Powertrain, range and charging
For the UK, Mazda has simplified things with a single battery specification: a 78kWh (usable) pack paired with a rear‑mounted electric motor. With 258ps and 290Nm of torque, the rear‑wheel drive Mazda6e reaches 62mph in 7.9 seconds and goes on to a 109mph top speed, delivering brisk real‑world performance rather than out‑and‑out fireworks.
On the combined WLTP cycle, Mazda quotes a range of up to 348 miles, which puts the 6e right in the mix with established rivals in the segment. When you do need to plug in, 10–80 per cent charging on a suitably powerful 195kW DC charger takes just 24 minutes in optimal conditions, while a typical 7.4kW home wallbox will fully replenish the battery overnight.
On the road
While the 6e shares its basic architecture with the Chinese‑market EZ‑6, Mazda’s engineers have retuned the car extensively for European tastes. The result is a composed, refined driving experience that majors on calm, rear‑driven balance rather than outright sportiness, with precise steering and well‑judged damping that keeps body movements in check while preserving comfort. Road and wind noise are well contained, and the long‑wheelbase stance gives a stable, grown‑up feel at motorway speeds.
Mazda believes the 6e will appeal strongly to existing Mazda6 owners who want to go electric without sacrificing style, comfort or quality, and to fleet managers seeking a high‑quality, zero‑emissions solution with a strong whole‑life value story. Dealers like Oakmere Mazda are already seeing interest from long‑standing customers who have yet to make the step to an EV but are reassured by the familiar Mazda badge and the 6e’s award‑winning design .

Pricing, trims and availability
Arriving at Oakmere Mazda this summer, the Mazda6e is priced from £38,995 for the Takumi and £39,995 for the Takumi Plus, with both models sitting under the £40,000 mark. Both grades share the same 78kWh battery and rear‑wheel‑drive powertrain; the choice is largely about the level of luxury and detail you want inside.
Available to configure and order now, the first Mazda6e customer cars will reach Oakmere Mazda in time for the key summer registration period. Later in the year, Mazda’s BEV story will expand further with the arrival of the all‑new Mazda CX‑6e SUV, giving Oakmere a two‑model electric line‑up.
