CONTRACTORS at Northwich’s new Chester-style indoor market are ‘raring to go’ as work to get it open for summer gets underway.

Specialist fit-out firm, Medlock, have now started work at the new Northwich Market at Barons Quay, close to Asda and the Odeon cinema.

In total, the fit-out is set to cost around £1.8 million.

The new market is being built by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) to replace the existing 1960s market in Weaver Square, which will be demolished to make way for new homes.

CWAC says the new market will provide ‘a significantly improved experience for customers and traders alike’, with a wide choice of stalls and facilities inside a prime corner unit position, with indoor and alfresco seating areas.

Its vision is to ‘create a vibrant market with a mix of traders selling quality goods and services, locally sourced food and drinks, offering great value and a welcoming space to shop, eat and meet’.

More than 1,100 residents responded during a consultation which saw 93 per cent approval for the new market idea at Barons Quay.

The first traders given space will be announced later in the spring following a recruitment drive held in autumn 2025.

Will Earl, pre-construction director at Medlock, said: “We are really looking forward to creating a wonderful new market in the heart of Northwich and bringing this once empty unit to life.

“Our team is raring to go and ready to deliver a great job for the council.”

CWAC councillor for Witton ward, Sam Naylor, said: “Our brand-new Barons Quay Northwich Market gets underway.

“This near £2 million fit out represents the biggest investment since the 1960’s towards our traditional town market.

“A wide range of stalls and facilities will open in the summer and mark the end of the Weaver Square market, which will be replaced with a choice of new homes which will breathe fresh life into our town centre.

“This has been a longtime coming and shows our determination to regenerate our great town.”

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, cabinet member for inclusive economy, regeneration and digital transformation, said: “I am delighted work is underway on the new market.

“This is the biggest investment in Northwich Market since 1960s.

“It’s a good news story for Northwich and will help attract more people into the town centre.

“The council is investing £1.8 million to create a modern and welcoming trading environment where traders can thrive, with inclusive community space for everyone to enjoy.”
