A special travel training day is helping students gain the confidence to navigate public transport.

The hands-on event, held at Greenbank School in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council and D&G Bus, introduced students to real-life bus journeys and vital road safety training through a short trip to Winsford.

The scheme is part of a wider effort to improve independence and life skills among young people with additional needs.

Cllr Karen Shore, CWAC’s deputy leader and cabinet member for transport and highways, said: "Independent Travel Training is a vital service that empowers eligible young people, giving them greater freedom and long-term opportunities.

"We’re delighted to work with Greenbank School and D&G Bus to support this important initiative."

Pupils practised walking to a bus stop, boarding safely and understanding what to expect on a journey.

In Winsford, they took part in a session led by the council’s road safety team to help them recognise hazards, stay safe and make responsible choices.

Dan Flanagan, area manager for Cheshire at D&G Bus, said: "I am delighted to have been able to supply a bus and to take part in the practical training experience at the Travel Training Day and appreciate how learning to travel independently is an important step towards greater freedom and self-confidence for young people with additional needs."

Charlene Brown, head of care at Greenbank School, said: "We are delighted to be working with the Cheshire West and Chester Independent Travel Team, to promote this wonderful service.

"The young people at Greenbank are really looking forward to learning these new skills."

She said the training supports the school’s mission to prepare students for adult life, helping them develop the independence needed to navigate their communities safely and with confidence.
