WORK to improve Northwich's cycling and pedestrian routes is set to get underway.

A new scheme will launch on March 2 and is expected to take around five months to complete, aiming to make the town centre more accessible and safer for walking, wheeling, and cycling.

Cheshire West and Chester Council has secured £892,000 from Active Travel England to design and deliver the improvements.

Cllr Karen Shore, deputy leader and cabinet member for transport and highways (including waste), said: "We want to make active travel a convenient choice for more of our residents.

"We are delivering improvements for Northwich to enable safer, comfortable and efficient active journeys.

"The route was identified through previous consultation for our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan which sets out our walking and cycling networks to be developed.

"Thank you to everyone who took part in the public engagement during 2024 and 2025 through online surveys and local drop-in events."

The scheme will create a pedestrian and cycling route connecting Northwich railway station to the town centre, with a range of new features to make travel easier and safer.

Key elements of the project include improved crossing points for pedestrians at side roads, reduced speed limits to make on-road cycling safer, and a signalised crossing for both pedestrians and cyclists over Chester Way.

There will also be public realm improvements and an upgraded crossing at the junction of Venables Way and Witton Street.

The work will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption, beginning with Chester Way and Church Road from March 2 to April 16.

This will be followed by works on Witton Street, Old Warrington Road and Station Road between April 16 and May 14.

The third phase will cover Venables Road, Albion Road and Witton Street from May 15 to June 19.

The final phase will include Station Road, Manchester Road, Victoria Road, Kingsway, Church Road and Princes Avenue, and is scheduled to run from June 17 to July 22.
