NORTHWICH folks who enjoy a pint and a game of darts might have been worried to see fences go up around the Greenbank Hotel.
They may rest assured, this is not the end but the start of a new beginning for the 131-year-old pub, which has been a feature of Northwich life for as long as anyone now alive can remember.
The Greenbank Hotel closed temporarily on Monday, November 3, for a ‘full refurbishment’, according to landlord, Benny Proudman, which is expected to last four weeks.
He also confirmed the Chester Road boozer will be back open for business on Thursday, December 4, well in time for the seasonal rush.
When Cheshire West and Chester Councillor for Witton ward, Sam Naylor, saw the builder’s fence while he was out cycling, he got the shock of his life.
He said: “My heart sank at the prospect of losing the iconic Greenbank Hotel to flats or another use.
“l got off my pushbike and managed to speak to a couple of onsite workers and the fantastic news is a full refurbishment is underway.
“It will be back and up and running in time for Christmas.
“I have enjoyed so many great nights in this place, and I’m so pleased the Greenbank Hotel is here to stay.”
The Greenbank Hotel was built by Warrington brewery, Greenall, Whitley & Co. in 1894.
An advert at the time said: "This first-class new hotel has 12 loose boxes for hunters [horses] and every accommodation for gentlemen and their servants.”
Greenalls fought local magistrates for more than 15 years to get a licence for the proposed premises after being first refused in 1878.
