IMPRESSIVE crowds gathered in Winsford and Middlewich to pay their respects to the towns' servicemen and women on Remembrance Sunday.

Both events took place on Sunday, November 9, each organised jointly by the town councils and Royal British Legion branches.

Winsford's service was led by the town mayor's chaplain, Rev Michael Hayden.

Wreaths were laid by the deputy lieutenant of Cheshire, Sandra Verity, on behalf of His Majesty the King, and by town mayor, Cllr Graham Newton, in memory of those Winsford men and women who gave their lives for their country.

Ms Laura Newton, the mayor's consort, placed a wreath at the town’s Boer War memorial.

Junior mayor, Alexander Spence, and town clerk, Mark Bailey, also laid wreaths on behalf of Winsford Town Council.

Councillor Newton said: "I'm proud Winsford residents turned out in big numbers yesterday to remember those who served.

"On Remembrance Sunday and throughout the year, we will remember them.

"It was a privilege to attend yesterday's Remembrance Sunday parade and service.

"Thanks to junior mayor, Alexander Spence; deputy lieutenant of Cheshire, Ms Sandra Verity; Reverend Hayden; the Royal British Legion Winsford Branch; Winsford Town Council staff; and all those involved in organising yesterday's event.”

Middlewich's Remembrance Day parade assembled at the town's Royal British Legion branch on Lewin Street, before moving off at 10.30am to the town's war memorial.

A Remembrance Day service and wreath laying ceremony began at 10.50am, with The Last Post played by a trumpeter from the Band and Drums of the Cheshire Constabulary.

Middlewich town mayor, Simon Whittaker, said: "People from all age groups turned out to pay their respects to all people affected by war.

"Thanks to everyone who attended and took time to say prayers and remembered those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom."
