The Citroen e-C3 is a fully electric hatchback that aims to make zero-emission driving accessible to a wider audience.
There are three well-equipped versions, with the MAX spec level, tested here, representing good value for money at £23,690 on the road.
The e-C3 is the first vehicle from Stellantis to be built on the new BEV-focused ‘Smart Car’ platform, designed to keep costs down while maintaining performance and practicality.
The vehicle uses a 44kWh Lithium Ferro Phosphate (LFP) battery pack to deliver up to 199 miles of WLTP-certified driving range.
The 83kW (113hp) electric motor produces 124.5Nm of torque and drives the front wheels via a single-speed automatic transmission.
The car accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 10.4 seconds and has a top speed of 82mph, making it more than capable for daily commuting and weekend trips alike. It feels responsive without being brisk or sporty.
When progressing on B-roads, ‘turn-in’ from the front wheels is very keen and you have to be conscious of ‘straightening up’ sufficiently when emerging from a corner to avoid the effects of oversteer.
In terms of charging, the e-C3 supports 100kW DC rapid charging, allowing the battery to be replenished from 20 per cent to 80 per cent in just 26 minutes.
Standard AC charging from a 7.4kW wallbox takes around 4 hours and 10 minutes, while a full charge from a regular 13A socket takes just under 22 hours.
The car comes equipped with a Combined CCS/Type 2 charging port and includes a Mode 3 cable for access to both home and public charging stations.
Citroen has also focused heavily on comfort and practicality. The e-C3 MAX features the brand’s Advanced Comfort Suspension system, which uses progressive hydraulic cushions to deliver a smooth, “magic carpet” ride. This is the first time the system has been offered in the B-segment, and it’s paired with Citroen’s latest-generation Advanced Comfort Seats, which use extra foam padding to provide a soft, supportive feel.
The interior has been designed with simplicity and serenity in mind. The cabin is more spacious than the previous generation, offering increased headroom, elbowroom, and best-in-class rear seat knee clearance. The elevated driving position enhances visibility
The ë-C3 MAX also includes a range of smart storage solutions, including compartments in the door panels, centre console, and under the central armrest. A wireless charging mat is standard on MAX versions, and the rear seats split 60/40 to accommodate larger items.
The boot offers 310 litres of luggage space, which should be more than sufficient for most everyday needs.
Technology is another strong point. The e-C3 MAX features a 10.25-inch colour infotainment screen angled towards the driver, and Citroen’s new e-ROUTES app provides connected navigation with live charging network updates.
For entry-level models, Citroen offers the ‘My Citroen Play with Smartphone Station’ system, which allows users to access music, calls, and navigation via their mobile device.
The e-C3 MAX is also stylishly designed, debuting Citroen’s new design language and brand signature. Its Monte Carlo Blue exterior gives it a distinctive look, and the interior features a fabric-wrapped horizontal dashboard section inspired by sofa design, adding character to the cockpit.
The current model comes with an 8-year/100,000-mile battery warranty and a 3-year/60,000-mile vehicle warranty, offering peace of mind to buyers.
In conclusion, this is a family run-around that’s easy to live with thanks to its compact yet practical dimensions, relatively low running costs and comfortable interior. It may not provide any driving thrills, but its appealing price is a step in the right direction towards democratising electric motoring.
