A PAIR of salt trucks are staying in Winsford after a big backlash against a proposed relocation to Northwich.

The Road One Roundabout local landmark is a recreation of a salt mining scene at Winsford Rock Salt Mine.

On Wednesday, September 3, in a post on social media, a spokesperson for Cheshire West and Chester Council said there was a plan to take them to a new home at Northwich's Lion Salt Works.

There was a big backlash with dozens of comments from those who said it was an affront to the heritage and history of a town whose working mine is the largest and oldest working mine in the UK.

One of the more than 50 commenters said: "[The council] taking away a local landmark and trying to discredit our local heritage as a hard-working, working-class town is downright disrespectful."

On Friday, September 5, in another post on social media, a spokesperson for Chester West and Chester Council said the proposed relocation was for restoration works which would now be done in-situ rather than at Lion Salt Works.

They said the salt trucks are 'cherished by the community' and they 'should have communicated better'.

They said: "We hope that this post reassures people that the salt trucks will be staying in Winsford."
