A SCOUT group which fundraised for two years for an Alpine 'adrenaline-pumping trip of a lifetime’ is seeing all its hard work pay off.

A 58-strong group of Scouts and Explorers from the 1st Hartford Scout Group, based on Bradburns Lane, finally set off for the Kandersteg International Scout Centre (KISC) in Switzerland on Saturday, July 26.

At 1,200 metres above sea level, the centre is the headquarters of International Scouting, and hosts a permanent ‘mini-jamboree’ where youngsters from all over the world meet up and share experiences.

Since arriving, the Hartford scouts have been mountaineering and whitewater rafting on the River Simme, as well as meeting colleagues form the Netherlands, Chile, Czech Republic, Spain, and Portugal.

They have also visited the beautiful Swiss towns of Kandersteg and Interlachen, and visited the Jungfraujoch, a ridge connecting two 4,000-metre plus Alps, often referred to as the Top of Europe.

The group came up with some highly innovative fundraising ideas to fund their trip, including the Explorer section launching its own Christmas single on December 20, last year.

Scout leader Ian Johnson, who is leading the trip, said: “What a start to the adventure it has been.

“Since arriving, we've already met Scouts from all over the world. It’s been amazing to see just how global the scouting community really is.

“We also got the chance to celebrate Swiss International Day on Friday, August 1, at KISC.

"A huge thank you to everyone who helped us fundraise and supported us for the last two years.

“Their generosity made this incredible adrenaline-pumping trip of a lifetime possible."
