NORTHWICH resident will be joining thousands up and down the country to remember a generation of men and women whose sacrifices kept us free from tyranny during World War Two.

Thursday, May 8, is the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE Day 80) and communities all over the UK will marking the event with beacon lighting ceremonies.

Northwich Town Council is hosting its own ceremony at Verdin Park from 9pm onward, which will include a short address by the vicar of St Helen’s Church, the Reverend Andrew Ridley.

Northwich deputy town mayor, Cllr Julie McDonald, will also be reading a special VE Day proclamation, and there’ll be music to get the crowd into the right wartime spirit.

At 9.30pm, the town's beacon will be lit, along with hundreds of others nationwide in what organisers have dubbed ‘a moment of shared celebration’.

Cheshire West and Northwich town councillor for Witton ward, Sam Naylor, who is also the council’s armed services liaison, said: “It’s vital we have as many people there as possible to pay tribute to the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

“I understand a lot of the town’s veterans will be coming along, and I want us to do them proud.

“Everyone is welcome, young and old. Let’s step up and show our support.”
