A STUNNING find has been unearthed by metal detectorists dating back to the 13th century.
A treasure inquest was opened at Warrington Coroner’s Court on Wednesday following the discovery of a scattered hoard of 69 medieval pennies.
These were found between November 2023 and January 2024 in the Whitegate and Marton area.
Of the 69 coins, 63 were said to feature Edward I, also known as Edward Longshanks and the Hammer of the Scots, who was King of England from 1272 to 1307.
Moreover, three coins featured Alexander III, King of Alba, Scotland, from 1249 until his death in 1286.
The final three were described as being ‘continental imitation pennies’.
They were found in Cheshire by metal detectorists who were searching the area with the landowner’s permission.
Jacqueline Devonish, senior coroner for Cheshire, said: “The scattered hoard of 69 Medieval pennies, found between November 2023 and January 2024, in the Whitegate and Marton area, appears to have the description of treasure.
“Therefore, an inquest will be formally opened, and I adjourn to be heard on May 6.”
