FORMER pupils are gearing up to share their memories and experiences of attending Winsford's old grammar school.

Verdin County Grammar School operated in the town from 1935 until the autumn of 1970 when converted to a comprehensive school.

The original school, which was established in 1895 as Verdin Technical School and went by several names throughout its history, was funded by industrialist Sir Joseph Verdin.

Now former pupils and staff who attended the grammar school prior to 1970 are being invited to an informal one-off reunion.

Members of the Winsford Verdin Grammar School memories Group have set up a committee to organise the event.

A reunion committee spokesman said: "It will provide a great opportunity to meet up with other former ‘Verdinians’, enjoy talking about times gone by, and share experiences.

"We have built up quite a collection of photographs over the years that will be on display at the event, together with a memory board and a selection of memorabilia.

"If you have any school memorabilia from your time at the Verdin that you would like to share, please let us know in good time before the event by getting in touch via one of the email addresses below so that we can integrate into the display."

The reunion will take place on Saturday, March 29, at the Meadow Bank Social Club, which offers attendees a paying bar and spaces to mingle and have quiet chats.

There will be an entrance cost of £15, which will include a buffet. Spaces are limited to 150 on a first come, first serve basis.

Payment for entry must be made before March 1 and can be done directly into the committee bank account. Bank details can be found in the Winsford Verdin Grammar School memories Group on Facebook.

Alternatively, members of the reunion committee will be taking cash and cheque payments only between 12pm and 2pm at The Delamere Street Dog, Delamere Street, Winsford, on Monday, February 17, and at The Salty Dog, in High Street, Northwich, on Monday, February 24.

The event was instigated by Colin Pierpoint, an ex-pupil of the school, who set up the Facebook group after recognising the need to share memories relating to the school.

A great deal of interest has already been shown on Facebook, with former pupils and teachers from across the years committing to travel across the UK to attend. The oldest pupil on the guest list so far joined the school in 1945.
