A THRIVING classic motor show is at risk of cancellation due to a ‘critical shortage’ of volunteers.

A summer staple of the town’s thriving events scene, the Middlewich Classic Car and Bike Show (MCCBS) has been pulling in motoring enthusiasts by the hundreds every year since 2008.

The two-day festival, held each year on Harbutt’s Fields, is run by a committee of residents who give up their time for free, and proceeds go to help local and national charities, including St Luke’s Hospice and the Northwest Air Ambulance.

The committee has now put out an urgent call for volunteers for this year’s event, which takes place on Saturday and Sunday, July 26 and 27.

While there is no shortage of classic car and bike owners who want to exhibit their beloved vehicles at the event, without enough marshals to help ensure everything runs smoothly, the show can’t be run safely.

MCCBS committee member, Alison Roylance-White, said the situation is ‘critical’ and it is ‘vital’ local people come forward or there is a real risk this year’s event could be called off.

“We’re urgently seeking passionate individuals to join our team.

“Marshalling it on the day is one of the most important things.

“The committee are there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but volunteer marshals are welcome to give just a few hours.

“Whatever time people can give would be very much appreciated.

“It’s about making sure all the cars and bikes, and all the visitors, can get around in a safe manner.

“You really don’t have to have a passion for cars and bikes.

“You just have to love local events and enjoy being part of a great group.

“It’s a lovely experience, and one I can wholeheartedly recommend.”

Anyone who can spare event a couple of hours over the weekend of July 26 and 27 is invited to a special meeting for new volunteers at the Boars Head on Brooks Lane at 6.30pm on Thursday, March 6.

Alison says the committee will be laying on free sandwiches and chips to tempt would-be volunteers in.

She added: “In terms of numbers, if we could get to double figures, I would be very happy.”
