Moving from Dubai to Cheshire last year wasn’t just about trading sunnies for beanies - there were layers involved.

The shift to a colder, darker climate challenged not only my body but also my mental resilience.

While winter in the UK has its charms - cosy evenings and crisp frosty mornings - the shorter days and lack of sunlight can take a toll on energy levels and overall well-being.

Yoga became my anchor during this transition, helping me stay physically active, maintain mental clarity, and build inner warmth.

If you’re feeling low on energy, dealing with stiff joints, or struggling with the winter blues, you’re not alone.

Thankfully, yoga can provide relief. As a yoga instructor in Northwich, I’ve seen how yoga helps boost immunity, improve flexibility, and support mental health - making it an ideal addition to your winter wellness routine.

Winter’s challenges and yoga’s solutions

UK winters are infamous for their grey skies and long nights, which often lead to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), weakened immunity, and reduced mobility.

However, yoga offers natural and effective ways to counter these challenges:

  • Tackling winter blues and SAD - yoga can help combat the effects of shorter days by promoting serotonin production and encouraging emotional balance. Chest-opening poses and deep breathing exercises are particularly effective in lifting your mood.
  • Boosting immunity - through poses that enhance circulation and breathing techniques that strengthen the lungs, yoga supports respiratory health and bolsters your immune system - vital during the colder months.
  • Enhancing mobility and flexibility - Cold weather often stiffens joints and muscles, but regular yoga helps maintain mobility and flexibility. Strength-building poses can also help your body stay resilient.

Yoga practices perfect for winter

Incorporating these practices into your routine can help you feel your best:

  • Breathing techniques
    • Alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana): balances energy and calms the mind.
    • Bellows breath (Bhastrika): boosts energy and generates warmth.
    • Skull-shining breath (Kapalabhati): cleanses the lungs and energises the body.
  • Key poses
    • Downward dog: stretches and strengthens the whole body.
    • Chair pose (Utkatasana): builds core and leg strength while stabilising joints.
    • Goddess pose (Utkata Konasana): opens the hips and chest while promoting strength and stability.
    • Sun salutations (Surya Namaskar): a full-body sequence that builds heat, stretches muscles, and increases energy.

As a qualified and insured yoga instructor, I’m also trained in pregnancy yoga and kids' yoga, making me well-equipped to run yoga clubs for children at schools. Yoga helps children build focus, confidence, and relaxation techniques.
