A YOUNG cattle breeder from Middlewich has been invited to join the crème de a crème of livestock judges at one of the country’s biggest and most prestigious cattle shows.
Tom Lomas, who breeds pedigree Holsteins, will be joining a crop of eight leading agricultural professionals on the judging panel at the Borderway UK Dairy Expo on March 14 and 15, run by top Carlisle-based livestock auctioneers, Harrison & Hetherington.
UK Dairy Expo is where very best cattle are sold to only the most discerning dairy farmers, so the event will be a platform for Tom to demonstrate his knowledge, skill, and ability to choose the winners from a line-up of outstanding animals.
Tom is an internationally respected expert on Holstein cattle, and has bred and owned three UK Dairy Expo junior champion winning heifers, and six class winners.
He’s also judged extensively across the UK, including National Calf Show qualifiers, the 2020 International Showmanship Competition at the UK Dairy Expo, and has been selected as the associate judge for the 2025 Swiss Expo.
Harrison & Hetherington dairy sales manager, Glyn Lucas, said this year’s panel of judges, including Tom, ‘represent the future stars of the UK’s dairy industry'.
“This is the first time we have called exclusively on home-grown talent to judge at Dairy Expo, and they are the best in the business,” he added.
“Tom is taking the industry forward in breeding and genetics, in best practice and production, and he and his fellow judges are well on the way to establishing a reputation for judging at a national and often international level.
“We are incredibly lucky to be able to welcome them back to Dairy Expo this year and as the UK’s leading dairy show, we are very excited to give these young people the responsibility and opportunity to judge on the biggest stage.”
After attending Reaseheath College in Nantwich, Tom set up a business with a friend, showing, preparing, and selling cattle all over the UK and Europe, also setting up his own Holstein herd, called TLC.
For the last 9 years, Tom has also been an Embryo Transfer Practitioner at Celltech Embryo Transfer, and has become one of the board members of the British Embryo Transfer Association.
Glynn added: “At least four of our judges have exhibited at every Expo, including Tom, since we began in 2012, and over the past 12 years they have collectively either owned or prepared 62 class winners, including 18 grand champions, six junior champions, and three supreme champions.”
