NEW CCTV footage has emerged of a violent altercation involving the former Northwich MP Mike Amesbury.
It shows him punching another man on Main Street in Frodsham with a left hook to the head before launching repeated follow-up blows while the man is on the floor.
The new footage, obtained by the Daily Mail, is from CCTV believed to belong to a taxi firm on Main Street, and the time stamp shows 2.15am on Saturday, October 26.
The MP for Runcorn and Helsby released a statement later the same day, at 4.30pm, in which he said he had ‘felt threatened’ on the street ‘after a night out with friends’.
But the new footage seems to show the 55-year-old striking the man, who the Daily Mail describes as ‘a constituent’, to the ground without any obvious physical provocation.
It also shows him launching a series of follow-up punches before three passersby, a man and two women, intervene.
Mobile phone footage shot in the aftermath of the incident, which has been circulating online since Saturday, show’s Mr Amesbury berating the man as he lies on the floor, saying: “You won’t threaten the MP ever again, will you?”
An onlooker, a male, can be heard in the background repeating: “The MP for gobs**tes.”
Cheshire Police confirmed officers were called to reports of an attack in Frodsham at 2.48am on Saturday, October 26 and 'inquiries are ongoing'.
In his statement, Mr Amesbury said he had reported the incident to Cheshire Police himself, and would ‘co-operate with any inquiries, if required’.
He added: “Last night, I was involved in an incident that took place after I felt threatened on the street following an evening out with friends.
“I remain fully committed to working hard for the people of Runcorn and Helsby, and am determined to remain an open and accessible MP for our community.”
A Labour spokesperson said the party was aware of the incident on Saturday and 'we understand that (Mr Amesbury) approached Cheshire Police to report what happened this morning himself and that he will co-operate with any inquiries they have'.
On Sunday, October 27, Labour’s education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, told Sky News’s Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips programme: “He is co-operating with any investigation (Cheshire Police) would want to take forward.”
Mike Amesbury was MP for Weaver Vale from 2017 to 2024, when he switch seats to the newly created constituency of Runcorn and Helsby.
He held several shadow junior ministerial positions while Labour were in opposition, but he is currently a back bencher.
Cheshire Police said: “At 2.48am on Saturday, October 26, police were called to reports of an assault in Frodsham.
“A caller reported he had been assaulted by a man in Main Street.
“Inquiries are ongoing.”
In July last year, a 56-year-old man was convicted of stalking the MP at his constituency office in Frodsham, where prosecutors said he was seen staring through the glass and asked guards about their level of security.
