SUNDAY lunch at The Bowling Green is legendary.

And it’s award-winning too having just taken our latest Best of 2024 crown – Mid Cheshire’s Best for Roast Dinners.

They’re famous for their giant Yorkshire puddings and the gravy is made with the juices from the roast meats.

It’s no wonder the Sunday favourite is a hit with customers.

Last month, we launched our Best of 2024 competition.

This year’s search for Mid Cheshire’s best in a whole host of categories started with hair and Fox Hairdressing was crowned our first winner quickly followed by JD’s Café and their pies.

Next up were picture perfect nails with Blue Beauty Cheshire taking the title and then we moved onto roast dinners with customers and readers sending their nominations and votes for their Sunday favourites.

Twelve tasty roast dinners in Mid Cheshire made the shortlist for Best for Roast Dinner with The Bowling Green taking this year’s coveted crown.

The building on London Road in Northwich is steeped in history.

The Bowling Green itself dates back to 1650 with licensed premises being granted around 1763.

More than 250 years of welcoming customers through the doors to enjoy good quality food and drink.

The actual bowling green dates back to 1777 and was one of only a handful of L shaped competition greens in the country.

It was last used for bowls in 1950 and was built on in 1981 now lying under the property’s rear extension.

The quirky features of the pub are still visible and there are countless nooks and crannies.

Landlord Tim Cooke, who is 58, said: “I took over as landlord in 2022.

“I’d had enough of the pressure of IT sales and had always wanted to run my own pub or restaurant having a passion for food.

“We serve fresh food that’s all cooked on the premises, taking pride in quality and taste.

“Our attention to detail is second to none, making sure that every dish that leaves the kitchen meets our high standards.

“Our Sunday lunch has become legendary with our giant Yorkshire puddings and freshly carved meats served with real gravy.

“We always serve two roasts.

“All veg is handpicked by Janette and peeled and prepared by us.

“We serve real gravies using the meat juices and we’re famous for our giant Yorkshire puddings.

“Customers like the consistency in the quality of the food we offer and our service.

“There are no hidden extras – everything is included in the price – even the cauliflower and leeks in a cheese sauce.”

The dog friendly venue hosts an open mic night each Monday in the beer garden and has a weekly quiz night every Tuesday with live music and bands entertaining customers most Saturday evenings.

Food is served Wednesday to Sunday and they specialise in Italian cuisine with an extensive Italian tapas, pizza and pasta menu sitting alongside traditional pub and restaurant favourites.

Many said they couldn’t wait to make a return visit.
