A MAIN road in Northwich is closed.

The Manchester-bound carriageway of the A556 is shut this morning (May 1).

It is closed from the Davenham roundabout to Gadbrook Park due to “defects” in the centre of the road, Cheshire West and Chester Council has confirmed.

Works are scheduled to take place today and the road will be re-opened as soon as they are complete.

This comes following a closure on Tuesday (April 30).

It is understood a stretch of the the A556 was shut until around 2.30pm.

The council says this was in response to defects reported the day before.

As most of the defects were within the centre white line, the road had to be shut to carry out the repairs.

However, due to two wide loads passing through the area the repairs could not take place.

The work is instead due to be completed on Thursday morning (May 2).

The A556 will be closed between the roundabout for Morrisons to the lights at Gadbrook Park.

Vale Royal Crematorium has taken to Facebook to warn visitors of the closures.

A post read: "Attention all visitors. We have been notified of an emergency road closure of the A556 Shurlach Road from Davenham Round about (Manchester Bound) up to Gadbrooke Park today.

"Tomorrow, the closure will be from Morrisons roundabout to Gadbrooke Park.

"For any visitors due to us for a service or to visit the grounds, please allow plenty of travel time and drive to us safely."
