COUNCILLORS have approved plans for a single-storey detached multi-use cabin at a Westbrook primary school.

An application proposing the site at St Philip Westbrook CE Primary School came before the development management committee on Wednesday.

The application was approved, subject to conditions.

The proposal is for a free-standing cabin that will provide space for the school’s breakfast and after school clubs, according to a report to the committee. It will be built on an area of the school’s field which currently has playing equipment, and are to be removed.

The report said: “The cabin will also be used to provide additional classroom space during the day, accommodating 30 pupils.

“The proposal will accommodate existing pupils rather than an increase school roll.

“There is no requirement for additional parking provision, with the proposal to accommodate existing rather than new pupils.

“The proposal’s use as a space for breakfast and after school clubs are anticipated to have minor benefits on the local highway network, with these uses reducing peak traffic flows at schools at the start and end of each day.

“The proposed construction access to the west of the proposal from the school playing fields onto Westbrook Centre is acceptable in principle.

“A construction environmental management plan is secured by condition to ensure that the use of this access point will not have a detrimental impact on the highway network.

“The impact of the proposal on the local highway network is therefore acceptable.”
