LAST year, Oliver Gibney won two British Hair and Beauty Awards – Hair Extensions of the Year and Salon of the Year.

He’s been nominated as a finalist again for 2024 and the talented stylist is determined to repeat his 2023 success.

Here in our latest Meet The Salon Owner feature, Oliver, who is 39, tells us how he’s opened a second salon in Frodsham after the success of his Barnton location, why it’s so important to share his knowledge of the hair and beauty industry with others and his hopes for his new technique for hair extensions - Glowlight.

When did you open the salon?

I opened the Barnton salon in 2016 and the Frodsham salon in 2023.

Are you local to the area? Did you grow up here?

Yes, I went to school locally. I went to St Nicholas Catholic High School and trained in hair in Altrincham.

Tell me a bit about your salon/business. What do you do? What services do you provide?

We cover all aspects of hairdressing but specialise in colour and hair extensions. I’ve trained all my stylists in hair myself. We won two British Hair and Beauty Awards 2023 - Hair Extensions and Salon of the Year - and we are nominated as a finalist again this year. I have just launched a new method and trade marked it as my own. I wanted to bring something new to the industry and will be giving training on this method – Glowlight.

Why did you decide to open your own salon?

I’ve always been entrepreneurial with the desire to work hard and make a difference in the industry. I enjoy training people and sharing my knowledge with others.

Why this type of business?

I wanted to specialise in hair and hair extensions, specialising in balayage and the latest trends.

How did the Covid-19 pandemic affect your business?

It was a huge shock to have to close the salon but clients were banging our door down as soon as we re-opened. We have had the best few years since re-opening and even opened our second salon, which has been a huge success.

What makes your business different to others in the same area/field? What sets your business apart from your competitors?

We thrive on the community feel we have created and welcome our clients and locals through the door for a chat and a coffee or some company as well as offering our treatments. We feel that our salons have created friendships between others who have met in the salon and it’s always a positive uplifting experience.

Why do loyal clients return to your business?

We give one hundred percent with every client. Our in-depth consultations give us the chance to really exceed our clients’ expectations and also the fact we open six days a week, work late nights and have appointments available from 7am meaning we are extremely flexible.

What’s next? What do the next few months hold for you and your salon?

We’ve got the Hair Awards to look forward to and the launch of Glowlight. Ruby, our junior will soon be fully qualified after 13 months intense training with me.
