IF you fancy yourself an amateur sleuth or a budding local historian, Hartford should be top of your list of places to visit this summer.

Hartford Civic Society (HCS) have launched a new interactive guidebook, Hartford I Spy, in time for the long holidays, which lets visitors score points by searching for clues among the village’s many historic and fascinating sites.

The booklet is split into sections, including: centre of Hartford; buildings; roads, rails and the river; Marshall’s Arm; green spaces; and life in hartford – to make it easier for would-be detectives to do a few hours here and there.

Written by dedicated HCS member, Heather Pinchien, with the help of fellow member Chris Poole, the 48-page book takes readers on a wonderfully well-researched and comprehensive tour of the village and surrounding area.

Those who manage to find all the clues can send off for a certificate and badge, but be warned, the clues are designed to challenge even the most seasoned Hartfordians.

Joanne Mitton, of HCS, said: “It will be great fun for families over the school holidays, but it’s aimed at all ages. It is full of interesting facts and places to find.

“We hope even residents who have lived in village a long time will learn something new.

“You score points for each find and once you score a certain amount you can send off for a certificate and badge.

“We hope it will prove to be enjoyable and engage children to take a real interest in our fascinating and historical village.”

The booklet is available now at Hartford and Greenbank Post Office, and Littler’s Butchers, for £2.00.

All proceeds will go back into the village and future projects by the Hartford Civic Society.
