Fast-flowing or deep floodwater is possible and, where flooding or lightning strikes occur, there is a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, while some communities might become cut off if roads flood.

Power cuts may also occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected during Wednesday.

"Where they do develop, they could be slow-moving and persistent, with as much as 20mm to 25mm of rain falling within an hour, and possibly 40mm in two to three hours in a few places.

"Lightning and hail will be additional hazards."
