RESIDENTS in Winsford joined forces to give their neighbourhood a spring clean.

A tidy-up day was held on Rookery Rise on Saturday.

Resident John Malam, who organised the litter pick, said: “We’d all seen how the kerbs were getting overgrown with weeds.

“I checked with Cheshire West and we were given approval to carry out the work.

“The council kindly loaned all the equipment, litter-pickers, gloves and hi-vis jackets, which are available to groups and individuals right across the borough. It’s a great service for the community.”

People living nearby spent several hours removing overgrown weeds and collecting litter.

John said: “The overwhelming positive response from residents has been far greater than I had hoped for.

“It wasn’t only those who helped, but many stopped to chat.

“Drivers tooted car horns in support, some let us use their green bins, and others came out with drinks, sweets and even bought us ice creams!

“It was a real community effort and Rookery Rise is looking all the better for it.”

A second tidy-up is planned on the other side of the road later in the month.
