A KART made from recycled scrap will be making its debut on the racetrack.

Items donated to St Luke’s warehouse have been turned into a go-kart by volunteer Peter Lewis.

The hospice ‘Scrappy Dapper Doo’ kart includes children’s bikes, the frame of a computer work station, parts of a broken exercise cross trainer and two broken bath seats.

Krazy Races takes place at Verdin Park in Northwich on Sunday, July 16.

Teams, including one from St Luke’s, will launch themselves down Castle Street in their hand-crafted karts tackling a track of more than 350 metres with chicanes, obstacles and water, cheered on by hundreds of supporters.

Peter, who helps at St Luke’s warehouse on Winsford Industrial Estate, went to last year’s Krazy Races and thought it would be a fun way to promote the hospice and appeal for more volunteers.

Peter said: “I used to build rally cross cars in the 1970s so I’ve had a lot of experience.

“I wanted to build something that would go fast down the hill, that would look pretty neat and could be made out of scrap items the hospice can’t sell.

“I’ve been plundering the metal skip at the warehouse and have managed to create it from bits and pieces I’ve salvaged like computer work stations and a damaged wall display unit.

“It’s going to have a plastic body on the front which is made from an old storage box from the top of a car.

“There’s a lot of work that people put into the karts and a huge amount of enthusiasm so I think it’s going to be a great event with a big turn out.

“I hope the kart looks lovely.

“It just goes to show what can be created from scrap!

“It will have the St Luke’s logo all across the front and I’ve got great hopes for it.”
