A radical shake-up of Parliamentary constituencies could see Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich combined into one new seat.

The move would also see Northwich lose its current MP Mike Amesbury, who has announced he would stand in the newly-created seat of Runcorn and Helsby at the next general election instead.

It comes as the Boundary Commission for England has today, Wednesday, published its final recommendations for new constituency boundaries in an effort to rebalance the number of voters in each area, with the number of seats in England set to increase from 533 to 543.

The move means the current seat of Weaver Vale would cease to exist, with two new constituencies - Mid Cheshire and Chester South and Eddisbury - taking its place.

Mid Cheshire would bring together Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich, and also include Davenham, Greenbank, Hartford, Kingsmead, Moulton and Rudheath.

The changes would only impact on how votes are counted during general elections and council wards would remain the same.

Northwich’s current MP Mike Amesbury said he has already been selected as Labour’s candidate for Runcorn and Helsby and would not stand for the new Mid Cheshire seat at the next election.

Weaver Vale currently includes Helsby and parts of east Runcorn.

He said: “At a personal level I will be sad to lose Northwich. It’s a strongly emotional decision for me as I will miss the people and the places. But the decision to carve up the seat was outside my control and it makes sense to stand for Runcorn and Helsby given it’s where my Frodsham home is based.

“However, I want to make clear that I remain MP for the town and surrounding area until these changes take effect when Parliament is dissolved for the next general election.”

Tatton MP Esther McVey added: "I am very sad to be losing Rudheath as part of the boundary changes.

"It has been an honour and privilege to represent the residents there since 2017.

"I have made many friends within the area while looking after the ward.

"We have had some significant wins in the area most recently ensuring St Johns Playing Fields and the surrounding part of the park are listed as community assets.

"I very much look forward to welcoming Lymm into the Tatton constituency and representing its residents, businesses and community groups."

The Government now has four months to bring forward an Order to give effect to the final recommendations.

Secretary to the Commission, Tim Bowden, said: “The recommendations we have published today mark the end of a thorough and consultative process to build the new map of Parliamentary constituencies.

“We have taken into account over 60,000 public comments, travelled the country, and heard many passionate views about how best to reflect local community ties in our recommendations.

“We are confident that our final recommendations are the best reflection of the statutory rules Parliament has set us.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has participated in the 2023 Boundary Review.”

On a regional level, the number of constituencies in the north west will decrease from 75 to 73.

By law, every constituency recommend by the commission must contain between 69,724 and 77,062 Parliamentary electors.

The commission said that as far as possible, it tried to take account of local ties, geographic factors, local government boundaries, existing constituencies and minimising disruption caused by proposed change.
