A 'FULL-SCALE' clean up operation has been launched at Roberts Bakery after its production area suffered damage in fire.

A total of 12 crews, plus aerial ladder platforms, attended the scene off School Lane South in the Gadbrook Park industrial estate after the fire broke out shortly before 11.10am on Monday (June 5).

All staff and contractors on site at the time were evacuated safely and no casualties were reported from the incident.

The blaze began in an old building on the premises, which was being refurbished, before it spread to the production area.

A Frank Roberts & Sons spokeswoman confirmed some damage had been caused to the production area at two of its plant bakeries.

She added a full-scale clean up was now in operation after which an assessment would be made on how soon the production lines could be reopened.

The company has other production sites that have been unaffected - one bread plant and a biscuit bakery in Northwich and one for morning goods in Ilkeston in Derbyshire.

The spokeswoman said: "We are looking at ways of maximising capacity at these sites to cover demand in the short-term while we continue the clean-up operation.

"We are currently working on a supply plan in discussion with customers across our branded and non-branded businesses to minimise the impact."

An internal investigation is ongoing into the cause of the fire.
