A WOMAN was shocked to discover a historic hand grenade in her parents’ garden shed, found among items her dad had collected over the years – including 20 tins of Heinz Beans and Sausages.

A bomb disposal unit was called to Weaverham Road in Cuddington on Monday, June 5, after Jo Tilley called police to alert them to a grenade she had uncovered.

“I have been sorting my parents' property out and I got round to doing the garden shed,” she explained.

“I just took it out of an old wardrobe along with 43 years of rubbish – and then realised what I actually had in my hand.

“My first thought was ‘is it real, or is it a fake one?’, but it still had a pin in it.”

Northwich Guardian:

After contacting police, a bomb disposal unit was called, which confirmed the grenade was luckily no longer active.

“They think it could be an old training grenade and if it would have been active, it would have caused minimal damage, but it wasn't.

“They presume it was something my dad acquired when he was doing his National Service.

Northwich Guardian:

“He had been at that property for 43 years and I had no idea it was there; I’d never seen it in my life.

“The funny thing was I also found 20 cans of beans and sausages when I was clearing out the shed too.”

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police confirmed: “At around 9.45am on Monday, June 5, police were made aware that a suspected historic hand grenade had been found at an address on Weaverham Road, Cuddington.

“Explosive Ordnance Disposal (bomb disposal) were called to the address and the device was removed from the scene.”
