WINSFORD town centre will become a 'destination for families' as work starts on an ambitious £21m regeneration project.

Construction workers from contractor Kier have erected hoardings around the town centre to begin the initial phase of the scheme.

The Cheshire West and Chester Council-led redevelopment project will involve the demolition of some existing buildings before new and improved units for B&M and Costa will be built.

A new 168-space car park will also be erected alongside planned improvements to walking and cycling access, and cycle storage.

Construction is due to be complete by the end of 2024.

Cllr Nathan Pardoe, cabinet member for inclusive economy, regeneration and digital transformation, said: "I’m delighted work has started on the council’s exciting plans for the regeneration of Winsford town centre.

"The project is vital to delivering on the aspirations of the people of Winsford and will help to drive the local economy in the town centre.

"Opportunities for new and existing businesses, and fantastic green open spaces for events or just enjoying a coffee, will make the town a great place to visit for local people.

"It’ll become a destination for families and will offer more than retail."

The council has warned the public to expect disruption to pedestrian access and routes while work is taking place.

And from today, the Dene Drive car park in the middle of the site will be closed, with residents advised to consider taking the bus, walk, cycle, or use an alternative car park for the time being.

Alternate car parks include: Asda Surface; Asda Multi Storey; Wyvern House visitor car park; Winsford Library & Vale House Resource Centre (staff and visitor priority); Winsford Marina; St Andrews Methodist Church (permit holders only); Verdin Exchange; Aldi; Farmfoods; Winsford Lifestyle Centre; Dene Drive Medical Centre; High Street car parking bays; The Queens Arms Wetherspoon pub (parking charges apply); Church Street; and Dingle Lane.

Cllr Pardoe added: "As with any town centre construction project, there will be changes for visitors and businesses.

"The Dene Drive car park will have to be closed while work takes place and there may be some changes to walking routes around the town, but I appreciate residents being patient while the work takes place to provide a bright and exciting future for Winsford.”

As part of the project, new open public spaces are being created for pop-ups, events and visiting attractions, with more green space in the town centre than ever before.

Proposals are also being developed for a community hub, which incorporates toilets for public use and adds to the existing town centre provision.

A CWAC spokesman added: "Town centre businesses have been contacted directly and the council is working with them to provide an interim parking solution for staff whilst construction takes place.

"All businesses in the town centre, along with Winsford Library and Vale House Resource Centre, remain open as usual for people to visit.

"While acknowledging the works will create some inconvenience, the council will provide regular updates regarding progress for the duration of the works so that people are aware of what is happening at the various stages of the project."
