SPEEDO Mick has said the support he received on his charity walk to Northwich today (February 20) has been ‘unbelievable’.

The Liverpudlian, whose real name is Michael Cullen, has become a well-known figure in recent years after trekking across the UK in a pair of Everton speedos in aid of mental health and suicide prevention.

Mick is currently undertaking what he describes as his 'Final Stomp' - a 1,000-mile walk from John O'Groats to Lands End, after which he hopes to ‘hang up his blue knickers’ after having raised more than £1 million from his challenges.

Speaking to the Guardian as he made his way through the town centre this afternoon just before 5pm, he said the support he had received on his way to Northwich and as he arrived had been ‘absolutely fantastic’ and ‘so positive’.

He said: “It took me an extra three-and-half hours at least to get into Northwich because of everyone coming out and stopping me to get photographs, basically supporting me and bringing me drinks, trying to throw coats over me to keep me warm.

“It’s been unbelievable the support that’s been shown.”

But the day had been no walk in the park after journeying up Snowdown at the weekend.

“It really has been a big struggle because I’ve just done the last of the Three Peaks which was on Saturday and I never took a break from that, so I’ve been walking yesterday and then today, so my legs are sore,” he said.

“I just want to say thank you very much indeed to everyone who has donated.

“We’re trying to raise awareness here for mental health and suicide prevention and everybody’s struggling at the moment with the cost of living crisis and the energy crisis and yet they are still digging deep, so I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart."
