AFTERNOON tea was first served at The Chester Grosvenor in 1882 and it claims to be the best in the city.
Having been treated to the indulgent festive afternoon tea in the hotel’s beautiful Arkle Bar and Lounge, it’s easy to see why.
It wasn’t just the best we’ve had in Chester, it was one of the best we’ve ever had.

The indulgent festive afternoon tea
Guests are welcomed with a glass of champagne served with fresh strawberries and clotted cream while they decide whether to opt for the traditional afternoon tea or the gentleman’s alternative – a heartier option that everyone can enjoy.
The traditional offering features a selection of handmade finger sandwiches on freshly baked bread, plain and fruit scones served warm with strawberry preserve and clotted cream followed by an assortment of homemade cakes and fancies, all with unlimited loose leaf tea or fresh coffee.
The gentleman’s version has coronation chicken on spiced curry bread, mango and yoghurt, crispy haddock bloomer with mushy peas and tartare sauce, and a French onion tart followed by cakes, fancies and scones.
You can also enjoy a gin and tonic if you’d rather not have a glass of champagne.

The finger sandwiches on the traditional afternoon tea are filled with roast beef, horseradish and mustard, honey roast ham and tomato, cheese, and smoked salmon, cream cheese and cucumber.
These are prepared fresh as you arrive for your reservation, which gives you time to sip your champagne and enjoy the fresh strawberries and cream.
The homemade cakes, treats and fancies are full of Christmas cheer – chestnut, pumpkin and fig – and the pineapple and coconut delight was shaped like Santa’s hat – a lovely touch.

The treats are delicate but bursting with flavour and melt in the mouth - delicious.
The plain and fruit scones are freshly baked and served warm with sweet strawberry preserve and clotted cream – there’s one of each so make sure you leave room!
The whole experience was a real treat – full of festive flavours and truly indulgent.
