A THEATRE in Northwich is appealing for donations and support to allow it to fund an expansion and contribute more to the community.

The Harlequin Theatre has been part of Northwich since 1946, moving in 1984 to its current premises on Queen Street.

The group originally had 32 members, but today there are more than 100 involved in a whole variety of jobs, such as acting on stage, directing, organising costumes, looking after the technical side of things and helping front of house.

The Harlequin now wants to do even more for the community with mentoring schemes, workshops, supporting local play writers and putting on more productions - but to do that, it needs more space.

An opportunity for another unit adjacent to the theatre has become available, so the group is looking to raise £6,000 to fund the expansion.

Theatre chairperson Laura Elizabeth said: “The theatre is a registered charity and fully funded by ourselves.

“We very rarely receive grants.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for the group that has been part of Northwich for so long.

“If you can donate anything please do.

“If you can't then have a look at our productions and come along to see one of them or if you fancy joining us send us a message on social media or via our website.

“There is so much talent in the arts in our town and it is something we should embrace.

“Our theatre has been used to stage plays by other groups, plus as a music and stand-up comedy venue.

“It would be amazing if we could expand and become an arts hub for the community.”

The theatre also prides itself on having a thriving youth theatre which meets weekly and welcomes members of all abilities.

Many previous members have gone into the arts professionally.

As the touth theatre performances are family shows, the theatre has taken the opportunity to hold relaxed performances since 2018, which has given families the opportunity to enjoy a family trip out to the theatre, which hasn't always been possible.
