A TEENAGE golfer has made history by becoming the first junior captain at his club.

Cheshire junior star Harry Godwin is now in the role at Delamere Forest Golf Club.

The 16-year-old also has a background with the Hartford and Vale Royal Abbey clubs.

Delamere Forest Golf Club has a great record of producing top junior players and Harry is among them.

Many have gone on to enjoy a fine career in golf, which is something Harry is aiming for.

Harry, who plays off + 0.4 handicap, said: “It’s a huge honour to be asked to be the first junior captain of Delamere Forest GC.

“We are so lucky to be able to play this incredible golf course and I am really looking forward to helping to grow the junior section and encouraging existing and new juniors to participate in coaching sessions and club competitions.

“I started playing golf at Hartford GC at the age of six and had my first junior membership at Vale Royal Abbey GC aged nine. Then at aged 11 I joined Delamere Forest and a year later joined Royal Liverpool GC.

“My dad first introduced me to golf when he took me along to Adam Powell at Hartford GC for lessons. Those lessons led to taking part in junior competitions and golf days at Hartford GC, and then onto club membership. I have always been an active and sporty person and I just got hooked by golf!"

He added: “I enjoy the challenges that come with the game, how no two rounds on the same course can be the same, how you need to think and adjust your game for the different weather and course conditions.

“Playing in junior and club competitions means you get to mix with lots of different people and there is always something to learn from them along the way."

He has enjoyed plenty of highs in the sport already.

“My golfing highlights so far are – finishing third in the Cheshire Boys Championships in July 2022, winning the Millennium Trophy in 2021 and being the Morgan Bowl Trophy winner in July 2022 with a gross score of 67. Also making the Cheshire under 16s and Cheshire boys squads."

He is not resting on his laurels and targeting areas of his game for improvements.

“My plan for the winter is to work on my short game consistency," he said.

“I am also working on my square impact release with my coach which will help me create a consistent shot shape and improve ball striking."

Off the fairways, he sees golf as his way forward too.

“I am currently studying sports and exercise L3 extended diploma at Reaseheath College," he said.

"After college I would like to play golf overseas, hopefully in America, through a sports scholarship or work experience that would allow me to utilise the skills and experience from my current studies.

“Longer term I want to work in golf in some capacity either as a player, coach, in course management or sports psychology. I am hoping to shortly start studying for my PGA qualification."

He has a golfer that he looks up to for inspiration.

“My golfing idol is Tiger Woods," said Harry.

"His ability to hold focus and perform at the highest level when under enormous pressure shows tremendous mental strength.”
