NORTHWICH residents have been left saddened after another popular longstanding business in town has been forced to close.

Hormbrey's Butchers announced this week it would, 'with a heavy heart', close its doors for the final time on November 1.

The announcement from the Weaver Square butchers, which was established in 1782, followed the news much-loved Northwich chippy The Seafarer closed down on October 23.

Guardian readers took to social media to share their thoughts and messages of support for the butchers.

Posting on the Guardian's Facebook page, Bobby Doull said: “It's a sad day when a business established that long ago suddenly finds out that after all that time, through two world wars and depressions, they can no longer afford their overheads.”

Keith Bouchier added: “These types of shops were Northwich.

"I remember going there every week with my mother, they knew your name, you got what you needed, not in a plastic tray from a supermarket.

"The butcher knew everything about the type of meat you wanted, where it was from, and it was always perfect.

"The town’s DNA is being destroyed, don’t tell me its progress, it’s not. It’s criminal."

Julie Marie Lyons posted: "It is disgusting and heartbreaking these small businesses are being forced to close.

"It's these shops which give the town its charm and keep it going. The sense of community has well and truly gone from Northwich town now.”

Tracey Southworth said: “Lovely memories of coming in the shop, lots of laughs and good customer service, such sad news. Good luck in the future.”

Dave Dunne added: “This is bad, another local firm goes to the wall. Great meat, pies and the best butchers. Thank you Hormbrey's Butchers.”

Christine Ludwig said: “I will miss this butchers, the best in town. Great family butchers and so helpful. Sad to hear this news.”

In a message on their Facebook page, Hormbrey's Butchers said a lack of footfall and the increase in energy bills were to blame for the closure.
