A WOMAN was found lying on the floor after her car is believed to have crashed into a garage forecourt.

The driver had just come through the car wash at Sainsbury’s petrol station on Venables Road in Northwich when the metal structure came tumbling down.

It is understand that the collision caused the canopy to fall.

A man who found the woman collapsed beside her car, described what happened.

Speaking to The Guardian, the 65-year-old said: “There was an enormous bang and then the crashing of breaking glass.

“I saw the structure of the car wash falling down.

“I jumped out of my car and ran towards it.

“I looked in the car, there was nobody there but I heard a voice calling for help.

“I ran round the other side and a woman was lying on the ground.

“The engine was still running. She must have let herself out, she hadn’t gone through the windscreen.”

The incident happened at around 3.50pm yesterday, Saturday.

“There was broken glass underneath the car but not where she was laid down,” said the man, who had been shopping in Matalan just before the incident.

“She was shaking so I held her hand and supported her head.

"I just knelt down next to her."

An ambulance was called and several other people and Sainsbury’s staff came to the aid of the woman, thought to be in her 60s.

It is understood that a GP and off duty paramedic also stopped to help.

“Someone asked if she had a coat to wrap around her and support her head,” said the man.

“She was lucid but very distressed. She didn't try to get up.

"There was no blood or scratches but she didn't try to get up."

"I have spoken to someone who knows her and she is still very shaken.”

Other witnesses have described the incident on social media as ‘shocking’.

One woman posted: “I saw it. I’m sending my love to the lady driver and her family. I hope she feels better soon.”
