Members of the Women’s Institute (WI) from across Cheshire have been praised for their contribution to the Great Big Green Week 2022 at Delamere Forest.

The Great Big Green Week is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Presided over by Gaia the friendly earth giant, the theme for 2022 - Making Smaller Footprints - was about highlighting the small changes people can make at home and in the garden which, if widely adopted, could lead to positive environmental changes.

Cheshire WI members shared their experience and gave advice on using up leftover food, building a bee hotel, establishing wild corners in the garden, planting ‘nectar bar’ window boxes for insects, and making homemade cosmetics.

There was also a laptop set up for visitors to check their local MP’s climate score.

Lead climate ambassador for the Cheshire Federation of Women’s Institutes, Sue Bentley MBE, said: “We were delighted to see this year a big increase in the number of people we talked to who were already making changes to their lives because of the climate crisis.

“A few years ago, we were trying to explain that there was a problem.

“Now everyone knows, especially the children."
