LIBRARY users in Northwich will soon be able to access services without having to travel to neighbouring towns.

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) have named a location for a new temporary library to operate while the historic Northwich Library building on Witton Street is renovated.

The new temporary library will be located at Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse on London Road, where users will be able to access children and adult books, IT services, local information, events, and activities.

The council is yet to announce when the temporary library will open, or its opening hours.

Councillor Louise Gittins, leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: “Our library and museum services will work together at Weaver Hall Museum to temporarily run both services from the same site in Northwich.

“The space available will allow us to offer a balanced temporary library service to residents.

“The site offers free parking, is walkable from the existing library in approximately 15 minutes, either through the town or along the river through the park."

There are also plans for be a ‘pop-up’ library service at Brio’s Northwich Memorial Court, where customers can borrow and return books from a small collection, serviced by library staff.

Work is due to start this month on the stabilisation of the historic Northwich Library building in Witton Street, after it was close in August due to safety concerns.

CWAC say that the first step is to erect additional scaffolding to improve the stability of the building’s structural walls.

The aim is to make the building safe enough for surveyors to enter, so that detailed surveys and structural investigations can be carried out in preparation for the building’s renovation.

CWAC have appointed a design team to work on plans for the building’s renovation and development.

These will be made available to residents and library users on the council's website when they have been finalised.

Events scheduled at Northwich Library have been moved to new locations, and Sandiway, Barnton and Weaverham libraries will continue to operate extended opening hours until Sunday, November 30.

Online services, including eBooks, can be accessed 24 hours a day at cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk/libraries.
