CARE home residents in Middlewich have been enjoying animal therapy sessions from snowy owls, cuddly guinea pigs and adorable dogs.

The visits to Newton Court Bupa Care Home were all thanks to Therapy Dogs Nationwide and local community animal groups, who all facilitate wellbeing-orientated animal activities.

While visiting the care home, the animals were cuddled and played with by residents and even visited some residents in their bedrooms.

Amber, a Leonberger dog who visits the care home every two weeks courtesy of Therapy Dogs Nationwide, has been a particular hit with the residents of Newton Court.

Amber has unofficially joined the Newton Court family, with residents recently spoiling her with treats, birthday cards and festivities for her birthday.

Amber even came along to Newton Court’s summer fete, completing an obstacle course as a source of entertainment for the residents, as well as attending a resident, Molly Keating’s, recent birthday party.

Janette Roe, a resident at Newton Court, commented: “We love Amber! She makes us so happy.”

As well as regular visits from Amber, residents were also treated to an owl visit.

Activity co-ordinator Louise Lee commented: “Some of our residents hadn’t seen an owl before so it was a really special moment!

“All our animal therapy sessions are a really important part of life at Newton Court Bupa Care Home.

“Seeing the resident’s faces light up is so moving and it’s a magical feeling as an activity co-ordinator to see them so happy.”

Resident Alan Practor added: “Animals are so wonderful and caring. They make us happy and brighten our days.”

Elaine Hollinshead, Newton Court’s clinical services manager, said: “Animal therapy is a great way to boost mental wellbeing for our residents, creating a calm atmosphere around the home, and sparking lots of joy.

“We can’t wait to plan more animal visits and are already discussing what animal to go for next!”
