A THEATRE company is putting the final touches to its new production, coming to the stage in less than a month.

The award-winning Harlequin Theatre has been busy in rehearsals with its latest production, The Unreturning.

The production focuses on the stories of three soldiers coming home from war, their stories set at different times over 120 years - 1918, 2013 and 2030.

The play looks at the profound effect war has on young people's lives and asks the questions, what does coming home really mean? What is home?

And when experience has shattered you into a million pieces, will coming home help to put you together again?

Theatre chairperson, Laura Elizabeth is directing the production.

She said: “I fell in love with a production I saw of The Unreturning in Liverpool a few years ago and on the train home I immediately bought the script.

“The script was read though on one of our play reading nights over lockdown and I fell in love with it all over again.

“Anna Jordan is a clever playwright who makes her work accessible to actors and an audience.

“She deals with deep and weighty subjects in a novel and fascinating way.

The Unreturning moves restlessly through each story, allowing us to delve into the minds of the characters; George, who is returning home to his childhood sweetheart in 1918, Frankie, who returns home and has to confront his actions while serving in Afghanistan in 2013, and Nat, who is returning home in 2026 to find his younger sibling whom he was separated from when war broke out.

“Our cast absolutely love working with the production team, there's a lot of passion which has gone into this piece.'

Like many charities, the Harlequin is still recovering from the effects of Covid-19.

Although the theatre has been open during the past year, it still had limited audience capacity.

The team’s aim this season is to return to sell-out audiences as it was doing before the pandemic.

The Unreturning runs from Wednesday, November 9 – Saturday, November 12, starting at 7.45pm.

Tickets for the Wednesday evening are two-for-one.
