YOUNG actors had audiences howling with laughter as they put on an outstanding junior production of a Roald Dahl classic.

For two weeks at the Grange Theatre, the young cast of Matilda received standing ovations each night for their performances.

The production was a child-friendly and condensed version of the Dennis Kelly musical adaptation - with music and lyrics by Australian comedian Tim Minchin - of the beloved children's book.

The show tells the story of Matilda, a gifted girl with an exceptional mind and a vivid imagination who takes a stand against her oppressive parents and headteacher.

Auditions for the show were held by Curtain Call Productions in March.

Rachel Harries, from Curtain Call Productions, said: "It was clear, right from the start and throughout, that every single one of the cast were not only fully engaged in their roles and giving 100 per cent, but they were also enjoying every minute of it too.

"Costuming, lighting, sound, all helped in the creating of this wonderful show, the singing was of a high standard throughout, and the choreography (from Joel Montague), was both exciting and creative, performed with such enthusiasm.

"Charaterisations were superb from all. Of course, Ava Gordon-Butler as Matilda was both sympathetic and relatable, giving a solid and engaging performance from the start.

"Both Ben Mather-Dodd as Trunchbull and Tom Green as Rodolfo had me howling with laughter for all the right reasons.

"Lydia Williams’ Miss Honey was a slightly stronger and more 'noticable' character than I have previously seen and this worked well; whilst special mention must go to Archer Armstrong, who truly made the character of Bruce his own.

"One of my favourite parts in the film realistically came to life when the adorable Bella McKinnley playing Amanda Thripp was thrown around by her pigtails.

"The way they did this was extremely clever and was brilliant to watch. Bravo to the whole creatives and cast. What a performance!"
