A CELEBRITY football match is taking place in Northwich this weekend to raise funds for a charity close to the town’s heart.

The match will kick off on Sunday, October 9 at Witton Albion FC for The Matilda Foundation, organised by Sellebrity Soccer and played by a host of stars from TV and music.

The game is taking place to raise funds for a charity set up in memory of Matilda Cosgrove, who was tragically stillborn in June 2019.

Her parents, Mark and Stacie, wanted to do something for children being treated at Alder Hey, and after raising funds to buy Christmas presents, were determined to turn that into a permanent legacy.

And Sellebrity Soccer are helping raise funds to continue this legacy.

In 2012, Darren Eadie and Kevin Cooper launched Sellebrity Soccer to raise money for charity by organising celebrity football matches.

Speaking about Sunday's game, Kevin said: “We have the likes of Lee Latchford-Evans (Steps), Ben Nickless (comedian from Britain’s Got Talent), YouTube star Woody from Woody and Kleiny (30 million followers on socials), Dan Osborne (TV), Hollyoaks stars Ashley Taylor Dawnson and Owen Warner, alongside other stars from TV and music.

“All celebrity players are subject to work commitments.”

Lee Latchford-Evans – one of the members of popular pop group Steps – said: “I’ve played in the Sellebrity Soccer matches for 10 years now and it’s always great to support different charities around the country.

“When I read The Matilda Foundation’s story I wanted to support them and this match as they do great work creating awareness and also raising vital funds for sick and vulnerable children.

“So, I very proud to be part of this match.

“The matches are always a brilliant family day out, whether you like or don’t like football.

“It’s more about the day out and seeing lots of celebrity faces, where you come and get photos autographs, as well as lots of goals!

“At these matches, the last two score-lines have been 8-8 so expect lots of goals and great fun.

“It will be great to see you all there.”

On Sunday, the match kicks off at 3pm with doors opening at 1.30pm.
