SKIPPER Will Avon wants his Barnton side to bounce back quickly this weekend.
The Villagers fell to a narrow defeat to Golcar United in the FA Vase second qualifying round last Saturday afternoon in front of a bumper crowd at Townfield Lane.
286 fans witnessed the end of an impressive eight-game unbeaten run for Liam Page’s men, who for long periods had the better of the game against their higher league visitors.
The Villagers found themselves behind after only nine minutes with the lively Kayle Price firing the ball past Dylan Cross.
The response from the home side was impressive as they settled down and started to play some good football and were quickly level thanks to a well taken goal from Freddy Garbutt who turned his man inside out before beating the keeper with an excellent effort after initially getting on the end of an excellent through ball from Matt Ball.
The Villagers continued to control the first half but were unable to get their noses in front as the experienced Golcar backline marshalled by former Rotherham, Huddersfield and Bury centre back Joe Skarz stood firm.
The second half saw Harvey Sample cause the visitors issues and the frontman was unlucky that the ball didn’t fall for him after a rare defensive lapse.
Seemingly out of nothing the visitors retook the lead just past the hour mark when Daniel Naidole finished off a dangerous set piece.
It was a deficit that the Villagers were ultimately unable to claw back from despite their best efforts late on, with Chris Hunt seeing his effort cleared off the line in what was the best of the late chances the Villagers created.
Avon said: “They are an excellent team, it was a tough game and we competed for 90 minutes and caused them problems.
“We return to league action and it is important that we bounce back now and show what we are all about at Foley Meir before a run of cup games.”
Next up for the Villagers is today's trip to Foley Meir in the North West Counties Football League Division One South, kick off at 3pm.
