A CAT rescue and charity is holding a fundraising event next weekend to raise money and educate people about its important work.

Willowsway Cat Rescue will be hosting the fundraiser, featuring Radio Northwich, on October 9.

Between 10am and 2pm, people can visit Lakehouse Field in Withens Lane, Weaverham, for a fun-filled day including a cup and saucer ride, refreshments, ice cream and more.

There will be stalls from small businesses as well as a car boot sale, which is open to anyone who wants to arrive on the day.

Willowsway was started in 2019 and is a non-profit registered charity with volunteer foster families.

It aims to ‘ensure the welfare and safety of neglected or unwanted cats and kittens in Northwich and the surrounding areas’.

Martine Gum, trustee and fosterer, said: “We’re a registered charity so all the money we raise goes towards the care of cats which come into the rescue.

“But we also provide cat care to people who may find themselves in a difficult situation.

“We’re trying to educate people about getting their cats neutered.

“We’ve just come out of the pandemic, but during it, people thought, ‘I’ll get myself a pet’, and at that time there were challenges around getting vet treatments because of lockdown, so people weren’t getting their cats neutered.

“Now, we’re getting daily contact from people wanting to surrender their animals, or from people who have just found cats as strays.

“Across the rescue, we’ve got in excess of 40 cats.

“We do have a number of cats in our care (eight at present) who will remain with us as long-term fosters, mainly due to medical reasons.”

After providing cats with shelter, love and care with its fosterers, the rescue aims to find them new homes of their own.

The team ensures all cats and kittens are vaccinated, microchipped and neutered before they are adopted.

The Willowsway fundraising day is a perfect opportunity for people to find out more, while helping to raise money.

“Whatever we raise from any event, we’re extremely grateful for,” Martine added.

“Events are also about raising our profile and spreading awareness of the work we do and what we can offer people.

“We would rather help somebody to keep their cat than take that cat into our care.”
