A 53-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for more than a year after stealing a 40-inch TV, an Xbox and trainers from a home in Northwich.

Ian Dylan Beckett, of Jennings Court in Marshall Lane, Northwich, originally denied entering a dwelling as a trespasser on August 23.

But appearing in Chester Magistrates’ Court on September 20, Beckett changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard how he entered a property in Chapel Street, before stealing a Samsung 40-inch TV, a black Xbox and red Xbox controller, a Sky TV box, Sky router, and trainers.

Magistrates were told he committed this offence while serving a suspended sentence for theft imposed earlier this year.

This dated back to February 24 when Beckett stole a pedal cycle worth £100 in Northwich.

Taking this into account, magistrates sentenced Beckett to 58 weeks in jail.

This was made up of 52 weeks for theft from the dwelling in Northwich, plus six weeks for breaching his suspended sentence.

Magistrates added the immediate custodial sentence was necessary because: “The defendant has a flagrant disregard for people and their property, because the offence was aggravated by the defendant's record of previous offending and the offence was committed during the operational period of a suspended sentence.”

Beckett will also need to pay a surcharge to fund victim services of £187 and costs of £120 to the Crown Prosecution Service.
