A NORTHWICH high school graduate has been given a role in new prime minister Liz Truss' cabinet.

Michelle Donelan, a former County High School Leftwich student, has been appointed the new secretary of digital, culture, media and sport, following Nadine Dorries departure.

She is one of a number of new appointments as Ms Truss announced her new senior team after her victory over Rishi Sunak in the Conservative leadership contest.

This will be Ms Donelan's second cabinet position having briefly served as education secretary in Boris Johnson's Government.

The 38-year-old, who grew up in Whitley, is currently serving as the MP for Chippenham in Wiltshire after being elected to office in 2015.

Ms Donelan’s parliamentary experience includes serving on the Education Select Committee for three years, before entering the Government in the Whips Office in 2018.

She then spent three years in the Department of Education, first as Children and Families Minister, then Minister of State for Universities.

In 2021 Ms Donelan was promoted to Higher and Further Education Minister, attending cabinet in 2021, and was sworn into the Privy Council.

In her spare time she enjoys walking her dog Bella in the Wiltshire countryside, according to her official parliamentary bio.
