AFTER being refused knee surgery because of her weight, one woman was determined to start putting her health first – and she has gone on to lose almost seven stone in just eight months.

Liz Lowry joined the Slimming World Group at Winnington Park Recreation Club in January and has since been named the group’s Woman of the Year for her inspirational attitude.

The 65-year-old was prompted to lose weight after being told her body mass index (BMI) needed to be lower to be considered for surgery.

“I had been overweight for most of my adult life and tried to diet on my own and failed," Liz said.

“When I first joined Slimming World, I had been refused for knee surgery for a number of years.

“They wouldn’t consider it – understandably – because I was overweight.

“My BMI was high and it had to be below a certain figure.

“My BMI is now so much lower – I can’t believe the difference, my blood pressure has also improved, and my cholesterol.

“Strangely, I didn’t find it difficult at the beginning, you’re very hopeful at the beginning and it’s a great plan.

“Of course, everyone has weeks which they find hard but then you just have to keep going.

“It’s true what they say, I don’t feel hungry, I don’t feel deprived, and it’s such a lovely group.

“I feel like a different person.”

Slimming World consultant Julie Large said: "Liz joined our award-winning group at Slimming World, Winnington Park Recreation Club, on January 2, and at that time Liz walked with a stick and had been advised by her hospital consultant that she needed to lose weight and reduce her BMI for her to have a knee replacement.

“She wanted to lose at least five stone. In 35 weeks not only has she lost five stone, but she’s gone on to lose a total of seven stone.

“More importantly she has reduced her BMI from 45 to 29.7 - a whopping reduction of 15.3.”

Julie’s groups take place at Winnington Park Recreation Club every Friday from 9.30am to 11am, and at Delamere Community Centre every Wednesday from 5.30pm to 7pm.
